Apology

Feature Article, October 2003

Alex Callinicos, Lindsey German and Bookmarks Publications offer their sincere apologies to Quintin Hoare and Branka Magas in connection with a book entitled The Balkans, Nationalism and Imperialism.

Mr Hoare is the director of the Bosnian Institute, a UK charity which provides education and information on the history and culture of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Ms Magas is a professional historian who is currently writing a book on the history of Croatia.

In an essay within the book, written by Alex Callinicos, it was stated that the regime of Franjo Tudjman in Croatia, where he was president from 1990, had ‘found apologists on the left - for example, Branka Magas and Quintin Hoare. This is surprising since Tudjman is a Holocaust revisionist, the author of a book which claimed that the wartime pro-Nazi Ustashe State in Croatia hadn’t killed large numbers of Jews, Serbs and Muslims’.

The allegation that Mr Hoare and Ms Magas had been apologists for the Tudjman regime and/or Franjo Tudjman himself is wholly untrue. Mr Callinicos, Ms German and Bookmarks Publications Ltd have agreed to pay them each a sum by way of damages and their legal costs. They have also undertaken not to repeat the allegation.
